I didn't think I was going to like Avatar.  I don't know why, I just hadn't felt drawn to the blue beings or the idea of a war on another planet.  So this is why I'm surprised I likedit, but I did!
I actually was very engaged throughout the movie and had one of those experiences where I was viscerally moved by the action.  I could feel it in my body.
And most importantly, I was completely drawn into the idea of a culture that is so connected to the environment it lives with.  Notice I say "with," rather than "on" or "from."  I believe this concept that the environment we cohabitate with IS A PART of us -- we are all connected.  When I live from this place, it becomes more difficult to view the environment solely as a resource for my benefit, but now it becomes a place that I honor and am grateful for because of how it adds to my life experience.  It becomes a place I want to give back to because I believe in reciprocity.  As the old adage goes, "what goes around, comes around."
This was not a movie to share with my 5-year old, and to be honest, I don't know at what age I think movies that feature so much violence should be shared with kids. But I am glad that I saw it and that these beliefs are being put out there on such a global, mass level.
How did you feel about Avatar?
